USC Football in September

Alright, so let me begin the long journey of catching you all up with this the rest of this year's activities. As the summer began coming to a close and College football got its start, I decided to watch a couple of USC games. Both would take me away from the Bay Area with one in LA and the other in NYC. Check it out:

It had been several months since I last drove down. Here I am rolling down the I-5 towards LA in the twilight with a lovely moon in the background. A nice image to break up the monotony of the otherwise uneventful drive.

The next day, I found myself back in good old DTLA (Downtown Los Angeles) on a sunny September morning enroute to the USC campus.

On campus for the first time in ages, we head straight to McCarthy Quad to immerse ourselves in the college football tailgating experience. Lots more folks than I remember, though you can really see how the success of the teams during my college tenure really laid the groundwork for this increased popularity. Just saying...

A brief pep rally in front of Bovard Auditorium (and near the Tommy Trojan statue) prior to the masses begin to migrate towards the Coliseum.

A beautiful sunset over the LA Coliseum as USC exerts its superiority over a gallant but overmatched Hawaii team.

Some of the folks I enjoyed the game with including some key friends from my time at SC (Cat, Claudia, Melissa, Ryan, Brad and Diane). Such a glorious start to the season!

We even got to use our football ticket stubs to get us into the Galen Center to watch some Women's Volleyball!

The very next weekend, I headed out to the East Coast to watch the next game in the season against Syracuse. The awesome weekend began with a late night dinner in Koreatown with Phil (sorry, no pics). The next day, I met up with Kurt for a bit of wandering about town starting with lunch at Ippudo. Good ramen, though I'm a bit partial to Ramen Dojo in San Mateo.

After lunch, we ventured to Queens to check out MoMA PS1 (called so due to it residing in Public School Building #1). One of the memorable exhibits was this room filled with confetti and industrial fans. It looked kinda like a colorful snowstorm as the paper swirled around in the wind. Quite pretty.

After getting our fill of art and also having sufficiently digested lunch, we headed down to Brooklyn to grab a Steak & Cheese pie from Down Under Bakery. Yum as usual!

After our quick snack, we tried to decide what to do next and ultimately came up with the idea to have dinner at Kurt's apartment. We bought some fresh lobster in Chinatown on the way back and carried them all the way back on the Subway. Quite an experience cooking live lobster and I'll simply say that next time, we'll have to try the freezer method to see if that might be better for them.

The ultimate result of our combined cooking: Surf & Turf (steak & lobster with mixed white/brown rice and a wilted arugula salad). Delicious!!!

The next day, we ventured to New Jersey for the USC v. Syracuse game at the New Meadowlands (home to my beloved NY Giants). A very modern and beautiful stadium on a lovely summer's day.

An early possession for the SC offense who got off to a bit of a slow start, much to the chagrin of the sizable traveling SC fan base.

After enjoying halftime, authorities alerted the thousands of fans at the game that the second half would be postponed to allow a thunderstorm front to blow through. You can see us all here calmly evacuating our seats to take shelter in the relative safety of the stadium. The storm generated significant wind gusts, heavy rain and lightning/thunder to boot. I'm glad we stayed dry as we waited out the storm. An hour later, everyone went back to their seats for the second half and USC overcame the lengthy break to score enough points for the victory over Syracuse.

It took a longtime on the NJ Rail to get to the game and they did a slightly better job getting folks out. Here we are waiting for the next train back to Manhattan (with Traci's friends, Traci, Kurt & Gigi).

After a yummy dinner of Japanese Izakaya, we met up with Phil for desserts at Kyotofu (a dessert bar that uses tofu in all their dishes). All the desserts tasted great and I'd recommend this place for a late night sweet tooth indulgence.

I had heard a lot about Shake Shack from many friends and I figured I should go see what the fuss was about. I'll say the burgers tasted great, but I don't agree that it warrants all the high praise that others have heaped on it. Ultimately: good but not exceptional.

Certainly an odd sight to see an aircraft carrier and the Manhattan skyline, but here we are at the U.S.S. Intrepid.

Of course we came to see the Space Shuttle Enterprise in its temporary home in all its glory. I know this shuttle hasn't made it to space like the others, but it certainly has a lot of prestige being the first of its kind and also being named after such a prestigious ship...

Kurt on the Bridge of the Intrepid, just in front of the wheel.

The Enterprise aside, this Lego model of the Intrepid could possibly have been the next coolest thing I saw there (complete with crewman overboard).

Ultimately a busy, busy two weekends but an immense amount of fun for sure. I'm glad I got to see my football team at the peak of their season (all downhill since those first two, glorious weeks) because it had been a while since I tasted College Football. More importantly, I'm glad I got to see a lot of old friends during these two trips on both coasts! Much thanks goes to Grant, Phil, Traci & Kurt for letting me stay over during my visits!!! Keep an eye out for the next update and Happy New Year/新年快乐!

Movember 2012

Hi folks. I apologize profusely for my prolonged absence. Work got crazy, I went out of town, other folks came to visit, etc. I promise I'll tell all the stories (well, those appropriate for publishing on the blog) in the not too distant future. Most likely I'll catch up over the Xmas holidays. I appreciate your continued patience.

Anyhow, it's the time of year once again when I make an attempt to grow a mustache for charity: MOVEMBER 2012! Kind of amazing that I've been doing this for 4 years now!

Week 0: Clean Shaven.

Week 1: Bit of fuzz and an election day cupcake from Sprinkles!

Week 2: Looks like a faint shadow has graced my upper lip. Fancy that.

I know many of you folks out there have been very supportive of my efforts through the years. I appreciate the generous donations and the encouraging words. Please continue to help me out this year in whatever capacity you feel able to. Donate Here: www.mobro.co/wes2225

Cheers and thanks again!

End of Summer 2012

So here we come to the end of another glorious summer. I couldn't just let it go by without some activity of note, so let's get to it shall we?

Nick & Lianne came all the way to visit from NZ! Pretty awesome to have them over as guests in this lovely area I've been for the past number of years.

Seemed like a good reason for me to go to my very first SF Giants game!

If for nothing else, then to devour some delicious garlic fries from AT&T Park. They even met the approval of the Kiwi visitors.

Not the best game for us to see since the Giants struggled against the Colorado Rockies. Unluckily for us, it turned out to be a dud game with no runs for the home team and not the most exciting example of a baseball game. We would've been better off coming any other day of the weekend since the Giants dominated those games with much better batting displays...

Inspired by some recent pics from Maui, I decided to have a crack at making some guri guri.

After mixing the ingredients, the mixture sits in the freezer and must be semi-frequently stirred to keep things evenly distributed.

The end product of all my hard work being a delightfully sweet and refreshing dessert. I still have a bit so if anyone wants to try some, come out and visit me...

To kill time while the guri guri set, I went out for sushi with some co-workers at a fancy place in San Jose called Bluefin. Pretty delicious and aesthetically pleasing to boot.

On Monday, I met up with Lianne and Nick on their last day in SF to take them to eat some Mexican in the Mission before taking them to the airport.

And what would be a trip to the Mission without some ice cream from Bi-rite. So good. Still my favorite.

Unfortunately on the way to SFO, Hippolyta had a bit of a incident involving a leaky coolant system and an overheated engine. She died after valiantly chugging along the 101 down to the airport with just enough momentum to coast over the crest of the offramp and down to the arrivals area. I bid Nick & Lianne a fond farewell as they continued their US vacation to NYC before towing my old, venerable car.

So, with a dead car that I didn't feel like sinking more money into, I thought it felt like the right time to invest in a new ride. I present this teaser of my new car and will do a proper entry on her when I come up with a clever name. I currently favor the name Odilia, though I welcome feedback in the comments.

Days later at Susanna's birthday picnic, I got an opportunity to participate in my first watermelon eating contest. Simple rules: 2 teams of 3 people each. The next team member can start only when the previous one finishes their watermelon to the satisfaction of a designated judge. No hands allowed.

An action shot of all the competitors: Sus' team on the bottom (me on the bottom left) and Jason's team on the top.

As you can see, I did alright for myself and got my team off to a strong start.

Happy Birthday Sus! Way to anchor our victorious team!!!

For my troubles, I won the wig shown above. I'll surely have opportunities to display this formidable hairpiece in the future...

The America's Cup Racing Series visited SF Bay with their AC45 catamarans. It provided a very exciting preview of the racing to come next year at the America's Cup! You can see Emirates Team NZ's red sail at the right of the pic. They didn't perform very well at this regatta despite being one of the stronger teams (on recent form). Hopefully they improve and continue to build towards next year's main event.

A few of the impressive boats, up close, on a truly spectacular San Francisco afternoon with a picturesque Alcatraz in the background. At full clip, these boat simply fly across the water!

A shot of Russell Coutts' Oracle boat with the beautiful Golden Gate Bridge in the background. He won the day's Match race against teammate, and Fleet winner, James Spithill (whose Oracle boat can be seen in the back left).

I look forward to the return of the AC45 boats in another month or so for another warmup race. Let's hope for a better performance from the Kiwis of Emirates Team NZ!

Alrighty. I hope you folks enjoyed the update. I've got a bunch of pics from my last two eventful and football filled weekends so stay tuned!

Camping in Big Basin

So a few weeks ago (at the end of July to be precise), I took my first big trip with some of my co-workers from Abbott. While I've gotten to know them in the office setting over the course of the year that I've worked there now, this camping trip to the Big Basin Redwoods State Park (a brilliant park in Santa Cruz County) would really give me a chance to see folks outside (literally and figuratively). Check out some of the highlights of the trip:

We were led by our "Camp Counselor", Linda, who owns an impressive array of camping gear including the kitchen setup you see in the foreground and the 10-person, 2-cabin tent in the background. I snapped this pic of the beginning of dinner prep as Linda slices some polenta.

As the sun set and the air began to chill a bit, we figured a fire would be lovely to help warm us all up as we waited for dinner.

Dinner is served: artichoke & arugula salad, polenta (one sun-dried tomato and the other red quinoa) and tri tip. Exquisite dining I must say!

We stayed up for a while talking about work/life and such until the fire began to die a bit and we all retired to our respective tents for a good night's sleep. The next morning, we woke up and began prepping for a lovely breakfast. I didn't snap a pic of the fare, but we have scrambled eggs and bacon warming in the foil trays over the fire. Again, you get another view of the kitchen setup as Mike, Alex, Me (slightly obscured), Linda and Steph (the only non-ABT person) hang around.

After a delicious and energizing breakfast, we all got together to tag team the cleanup. The kitchen setup included a trough style sink where we gathered together to wash dishes: Me, Mike, Naomi, Steph, Adam and Alex.

We took our time getting ready so we didn't get on the trail till about noon. We took the trail from the Visitor Center out to Berry Creek Falls which included a healthy dose of elevation change. We didn't do the full loop hike but we did subject ourselves to a particularly strenuous section of the trail as the sign indicates.

The long slog down to the falls was definitely worth the effort as you can see.

Me, Naomi and Mike enjoy a bit of a break near the base of the falls where we rested, snacked and enjoyed the scenery.

Another view of Berry Creek Falls, this time from below. Very, very pretty and a reminder of the lovely area we live near.

We took a pretty aggressive pace on the way back and made it in very good time. As a reward, and for the few folks in the group who had not tried it before, we bought some It's-It ice cream sandwiches from the store at near the Visitor Center. Delicious, especially after all that physical exertion.

A pretty view of the roadway near our campsite (Sempervirens).

Our yummy dinner: chicken nachos (someone, who shall remain nameless - not me = forgot to bring tortillas and instead brought tortilla chips) and homemade bean salad.

As we sat around the campfire after dinner and played games, this particularly brave critter wandered in and out of our campsite. These guys just aren't very cute in real life...

Sadly on Sunday, it was time to pack up and head back to the real world. Did you know a Honda Element could fit so much cargo?

We all had a great time and much thanks goes out to Linda for putting it all together. Thanks also to everyone who came and made for a really fun group as well. We'll have to do this again sometime.
