End of Summer 2012

So here we come to the end of another glorious summer. I couldn't just let it go by without some activity of note, so let's get to it shall we?

Nick & Lianne came all the way to visit from NZ! Pretty awesome to have them over as guests in this lovely area I've been for the past number of years.

Seemed like a good reason for me to go to my very first SF Giants game!

If for nothing else, then to devour some delicious garlic fries from AT&T Park. They even met the approval of the Kiwi visitors.

Not the best game for us to see since the Giants struggled against the Colorado Rockies. Unluckily for us, it turned out to be a dud game with no runs for the home team and not the most exciting example of a baseball game. We would've been better off coming any other day of the weekend since the Giants dominated those games with much better batting displays...

Inspired by some recent pics from Maui, I decided to have a crack at making some guri guri.

After mixing the ingredients, the mixture sits in the freezer and must be semi-frequently stirred to keep things evenly distributed.

The end product of all my hard work being a delightfully sweet and refreshing dessert. I still have a bit so if anyone wants to try some, come out and visit me...

To kill time while the guri guri set, I went out for sushi with some co-workers at a fancy place in San Jose called Bluefin. Pretty delicious and aesthetically pleasing to boot.

On Monday, I met up with Lianne and Nick on their last day in SF to take them to eat some Mexican in the Mission before taking them to the airport.

And what would be a trip to the Mission without some ice cream from Bi-rite. So good. Still my favorite.

Unfortunately on the way to SFO, Hippolyta had a bit of a incident involving a leaky coolant system and an overheated engine. She died after valiantly chugging along the 101 down to the airport with just enough momentum to coast over the crest of the offramp and down to the arrivals area. I bid Nick & Lianne a fond farewell as they continued their US vacation to NYC before towing my old, venerable car.

So, with a dead car that I didn't feel like sinking more money into, I thought it felt like the right time to invest in a new ride. I present this teaser of my new car and will do a proper entry on her when I come up with a clever name. I currently favor the name Odilia, though I welcome feedback in the comments.

Days later at Susanna's birthday picnic, I got an opportunity to participate in my first watermelon eating contest. Simple rules: 2 teams of 3 people each. The next team member can start only when the previous one finishes their watermelon to the satisfaction of a designated judge. No hands allowed.

An action shot of all the competitors: Sus' team on the bottom (me on the bottom left) and Jason's team on the top.

As you can see, I did alright for myself and got my team off to a strong start.

Happy Birthday Sus! Way to anchor our victorious team!!!

For my troubles, I won the wig shown above. I'll surely have opportunities to display this formidable hairpiece in the future...

The America's Cup Racing Series visited SF Bay with their AC45 catamarans. It provided a very exciting preview of the racing to come next year at the America's Cup! You can see Emirates Team NZ's red sail at the right of the pic. They didn't perform very well at this regatta despite being one of the stronger teams (on recent form). Hopefully they improve and continue to build towards next year's main event.

A few of the impressive boats, up close, on a truly spectacular San Francisco afternoon with a picturesque Alcatraz in the background. At full clip, these boat simply fly across the water!

A shot of Russell Coutts' Oracle boat with the beautiful Golden Gate Bridge in the background. He won the day's Match race against teammate, and Fleet winner, James Spithill (whose Oracle boat can be seen in the back left).

I look forward to the return of the AC45 boats in another month or so for another warmup race. Let's hope for a better performance from the Kiwis of Emirates Team NZ!

Alrighty. I hope you folks enjoyed the update. I've got a bunch of pics from my last two eventful and football filled weekends so stay tuned!
